Invoice number generator

Generate invoice numbers from your own pattern: pick a preset or write a pattern, set a start number, then copy or download the list. Everything runs in your browser.

Generate invoice numbers

Choose a preset

The pattern is valid.

Placeholders in the pattern
  • {YYYY} four-digit year, e.g. 2026
  • {YY} two-digit year, e.g. 26
  • {MM} month, e.g. 10
  • {DD} day, e.g. 08
  • {SEQ:4} running number with four digits (0001); {SEQ} without padding

Everything else (letters, digits, hyphen, slash) is kept as it is. The running number is required and may appear only once. The German tokens {JJJJ}, {JJ}, {TT}, {NR} work as well.

Result (0 numbers)

The generator does not know which invoice numbers you have already issued. Before using the numbers, make sure none appears twice, and set the start number after your last issued invoice.

What German law requires of an invoice number

Under § 14 (4) no. 4 of the German VAT Act (UStG), an invoice must contain, among other things, “a sequential number with one or more number ranges, assigned once by the invoice issuer to identify the invoice”. In other words, a number that identifies each invoice unambiguously and is used only once. The law allows one or several number ranges for this.

The text does not say how the number is built. The patterns in this generator are therefore examples of common notations, not requirements. Which variant suits your business is best clarified with your tax adviser. If you are not subject to German law, check the rules of your own country.

A note on the word “credit note”

In the German VAT Act, a “Gutschrift” has a meaning of its own: it is an invoice issued by the recipient of a supply instead of the supplier (§ 14 (2) UStG). It is not the same as the everyday credit note, which corrects an earlier invoice. How you number correction or cancellation documents is not answered by this generator.

What the generator cannot do

  • It does not know which numbers you have already issued and does not check your records for gaps or duplicates.
  • It does not replace bookkeeping: issuing real numbers belongs in your invoicing software or number register.

For demos and tests, the sample shop database contains orders with order numbers and totals, and the test IBAN generator creates account numbers for sample invoices.

Frequently asked questions

May an invoice number contain letters?
German law requires a sequential number with one or more number ranges. Prefixes such as “INV-” or the year are common in practice; what matters is that the number identifies the invoice unambiguously and that you assign it only once.
Does the number have to start at 1?
§ 14 UStG does not prescribe a fixed start number. What matters is that numbers within a number range are assigned sequentially and never appear twice.
Can the generator prevent duplicate numbers?
No. Within one list it creates consecutive, and therefore unique, numbers, but it does not know your earlier invoices. Your bookkeeping or invoicing software has to keep track of which number is free next.
Is my input stored?
No. Pattern, start number and result stay in the browser and are not sent to a server.
Can I use English or German placeholders?
Both. {YYYY}, {YY}, {MM}, {DD} and {SEQ:4} are the English names; the German names {JJJJ}, {JJ}, {TT} and {NR:4} work in the same way.
